Visitors to the Faculty of Divinity

Health & Safety Policy

The Faculty's Health & Safety Policy covers all staff, students and visitors to the building. Please ensure you read, understand, and take note of it as entering the building signifies your acceptance of and agreement to abide by the Faculty of Divinity's Health & Safety Policy.

Getting to Divinity

The Faculty of Divinity is on the Sidgwick Site, near the University Library. The Citi4 and Uni4 bus stops nearby, on West Road. To help with finding us, you could consult the Official Cambridge Map, showing the Faculty of Divinity.

Visiting Fellows

We are able to give the title 'Visiting Fellow' to those who are already engaged in an academic career, and who are employed in a University or Theological College (Seminary), either in the U.K. or in another country. Such a person will normally have a Ph.D. and will probably wish to come to Cambridge for part or the whole of a sabbatical leave - anything from a month to a year is possible - to work on material available here in Cambridge or attached to one of our projects.

What we can offer

For a nominal fee, we are able to offer Visiting Fellows an academic 'home' in Cambridge, with the use of Faculty and University facilities such as libraries, computing, and common rooms, and entry to such lectures and seminars throughout the University as may interest you. We may also be able to offer the use of an office if such space is available at the time.

In certain cases (if forewarned by at least a year) we may also be able to arrange a College affiliation which would give you dining privileges in the College and possibly also accommodation.

How to apply

Please send a full curriculum vitae with a detailed covering letter stating why and for how long you wish to come to Cambridge, and an outline of the work you intend to do while here.

Please ask two academic referees to write to us on your behalf stating the reasons why it would be helpful for you to spend time in Cambridge.

Please note that applications will be considered once a term and will be judged strictly on academic merit.

Students who wish to visit Cambridge as part of their studies

If you have already embarked upon a Masters or Ph.D. programme, you must apply in the normal way as if you were going to do your entire Masters or Ph.D. here. You will have to pay the same University and College fees as all other students for the period that you wish to stay here: this will guarantee you a College and supervision. There is no way of avoiding paying these fees.

How to apply

  • Email admissions@gradstudies.cam.ac.uk for an application pack, fill it out and send it back to the Board of Graduate Studies.
  • State clearly on your form that you are already enrolled on a postgraduate course at your home university and that you wish to come to Cambridge as part of your course (state the length of time you wish to spend here) but that you do not wish to enroll for a Cambridge degree.
  • Your application will then be considered by the Faculty's Degree Committee and you will be informed as to the results within six weeks of your application.
  • If accepted, you will be given a College and accommodation and access to all University and College facilities.
  • If you are an undergraduate wishing to spend some time here, you will have to apply directly to the College of your choice (see the University's web page) and ask them if they are willing to give you a place as a Visiting Scholar. Each College will have its own quota for such visitors, so you should apply well in advance. Each College will also have its own fees. This process is nothing to do with the Faculty of Divinity, and will have to be managed entirely by you. If you are accepted by a College, the Faculty may be able to provide a supervisor, but this is not guaranteed.
  • If you are an EU student applying under the ERASMUS scheme, please check to see if Cambridge has an agreement with your university; if not, we are unable to accept you. If an agreement does exist, please contact Dr Douglas Hedley, the Faculty's ERASMUS Coordinator and he will guide you through the process of applying to a College.
